A story about Ted by Martyn Long

I remember Ted well, he was such a calm, lovely person.

My best memory of Ted was when the Hampshire Fire Service Officers club arranged an evening on board HMS Fourdryant, an old timber warship. We had to get there by small ferry. On the way back Ted was sitting behind me, and he was next to Sir Kenneth Holland, Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Fire Services in England. Ted did not know who he was and I heard him ask 'who are you'? A reply of 'I'm Kenneth Holland', to which Ted replied 'I thought you were a Station Officer'. Ted had consumed a few beers, but when the story got around he was hailed a hero.

Ted was a great person loved by all. RIP Martyn Long
